This year we decided to celebrate the Fourth of July by reading Fredrick Douglass’ speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?
The event will take place on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 11 am outside the property of Historic Northampton. People will have the option to attend in person or watch at home. Each attendee will have the opportunity to take turns reading different passages. The event is 100% free and open to the public. Copies of Frederick Douglass’ speech will be available.
We take pride in the history of our area and community. We hope to see many generations ahead of us learn and withhold the promise of liberation for all. We want everyone to face the past straight ahead and fight for justice.
Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and Lydia Maria Child walked the streets of Northampton and Florence 241 years ago in the name of freedom for the Enslaved Blacks. Let’s show our support for our heroes and honor their legacies.
